"Haunting" and "evasive" describe the sound as much as the band’s namesake, Throwing Ghost. Formed in 2013, the band members have all been involved in other projects over the last decade, occasionally with one another. Their eclectic influences—from folk to jazz, from metal to progressive, from avant-garde to post-rock shoegazers—have helped to shape the sound heard on their first EP, Waves. What makes this group capable of such dynamic music is the level of musicianship each brings to the band’s sound.
While not a riff-driven band, Throwing Ghost relies on a complex sonic interplay that exists between accomplished musicians. Rather than the music supporting the vocals, the band creates dynamic ebbs and flows with bass player Tim Newman’s voice—ranging from near whispers to throaty baritone screams—mirror the mood of the music, almost reacting to what he’s hearing rather than dictating the song’s direction. His active bass work finds a way to complement the shifting sounds, from delicate to explosive. The guitar compositions of Barry Wilson and Shane Wolverton have a synergistic effect, working together to create a soundscape that acts as a soundtrack to our most emotional moments. Drummer Jake Harris’s deft percussion work punctuates these moments with restraint or ferocity inspired by the mood the band has decided upon for each given song. In addition to the sweeping sound of the instruments, each member is capable of contributing effortless backing vocals should the song demand it.
In a land rife with musical genres, Throwing Ghost offers a new, holistic comingling of fresh sounds. There is something in Waves for anyone who loves, or hates, rock.
